Job Profiles Across Our Group

Sales/Client Management

Nina Ota

Vice President, Marketing & Customer Experience

First Insurance Company of Hawaii

What do you do:
My current role is the Vice President of Marketing & Customer Experience. I oversee PR & Advertising and all Customer Experience functions, including Agency Relations.
At a high level, I am responsible for implementing tools and processes to monitor, measure and improve the service we deliver across customer touchpoints; maintaining strong relationships with our agency partners; and increasing FICOH brand awareness. Not easy tasks! Fortunately, we have a great team that does an excellent job, which makes my job much easier.
On a typical day, I’ll have 3-4 meetings to attend. On a busy day, I may have 6-8 meetings on my calendar. Outside of meetings, my daily work varies based on what’s happening in the organization and marketplace. Tasks run the gamut from preparing for presentations, to handling approvals and/or customer calls that are escalated to me, to strategizing for FICOH’s future, to process improvement initiatives.
Why did you choose this career:
I call it my mother’s magic. My mom has always been a huge influence in my life and she has guided me on all sorts of things, usually without my realization until after the fact! After I graduated high school, she helped get me a summer job working for her insurance agent at Sedgwick James as a clerk. Then in my last year of college at the University of Washington, First Insurance recruited via the Hawaii Club... I interviewed during Christmas break and had a job at FICOH before I graduated.
FICOH has treated me extremely well and I feel very fortunate to work at this well-established local company with Tokio Marine’s global backing. I have been given the opportunity to work in various departments including Personal Underwriting, Commercial Underwriting, and Information Technology. Each step in my career has allowed me to learn more about this great organization and has given me more of an appreciation for the complex industry we work in!

Claims

Kimberly B. Czap

Vice President, Surety Claims

Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Companies

What do you do:
As Vice President within the Surety division of Philadelphia Insurance Company, I have the privilege of leading a team of passionate and energetic Surety Claims professionals, as well as participating in many facets of the growth and direction of the Surety operation. In addition to overseeing claims, I assist senior leaders in identifying trends and legal issues impacting the business; interface with reinsurers and other key partners; and implement practices and tools for mitigating risks. My days are filled with a diverse mix of responsibilities including: recruiting, managing, and developing the Surety Claims team; legal review and drafting; product risk assessment; mitigating complex surety claims; developing data metrics; marketing; and furthering relationships with our business partners. I also receive the honor of speaking at many industry events and serve on committees of external organizations that help shape and promote the surety industry.
Through the support of senior leadership, the Surety Claims team has expanded to include experienced attorneys, examiners, an engineer, and administrators to meet the needs of the growing business. Our success in bringing together a talented and experienced Surety team is due in large part to the exemplary reputation and support of Philadelphia Insurance and Tokio Marine.
Why did you choose this career:
A common perception is that an insurance company only sells policies; but in reality, it also sells the promise of quality claim service. Claims personnel play a vital role in the company through their interactions with customers during a time of personal or financial crisis; and the reputation of the company can be impacted positively or negatively by a claims experience. Surety claims involve a unique scenario of factors such as law, contracts, accounting, and engineering; and our team collaborates with internal and external business partners to find creative solutions to complex issues. We continually strive to innovate, to stay engaged, and to set a standard within the industry.
Years ago, I chose the path of a corporate attorney rather than a litigator with the hopes of being exposed to a wide variety of experiences in a business environment. My first career opportunity was in surety claims, and I have remained in this industry because of the diverse and dynamic nature of the work. Philadelphia Insurance and Tokio Marine provided me with a unique and exciting opportunity as an entrepreneur to lead and expand the Surety Claims department, and to help contribute to the overall success of the operation.

Risk Management/Actuarial

Loh Ka Weng

General Manager

Tokio Marine Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad

What do you do:
I am a UK qualified actuary specialising in the general insurance business and was working in the Actuarial & Risk Management department of Tokio Marine Asia for 5 years before accepting a secondment to Malaysia in 2018. Currently, I head the actuarial department and act as the Appointed Actuary for Tokio Marine Insurance Malaysia.
The actuarial team consists of 9 members and our responsibilities includes performing statutory valuation, assess the adequacy of capital and reinsurance structure, review product pricing, perform data analytics and prepare portfolio monitoring reports. Specifically for me, my main responsibilities varies depending on the time of the year and can be categorized into the following:
  • 1. Statutory reporting: review and sign-off on the actuarial reserves on a quarterly basis and prepare Financial Condition Report.
  • 2. Capital modelling: review modelling results for business planning and capital assessment and assist in the stress testing for the ERM team.
  • 3. Reinsurance: provide suggestions to optimise RI structures.
  • 4. Other ad-hoc projects such as IFRS17 assessment and implementation.
Why did you choose this career:
Why I chose to be an actuary?
Well, unfortunately I do not have any exciting stories to share except the standard, typical and boring answer given by most* actuaries: I had no passion for arts or sciences but quite good at mathematics.
Looking back now with the benefit of time and perspective, while the journey of passing exams and working full time (at a consulting firm and in Asia no less) was not fun and quite frankly painful, I never regretted the decision to study actuarial. I treated every challenge in this journey as part of character building and motivation to work harder and smarter. It was a valuable experience, as it prepared me well in tackling various challenges and gave me the ability to adapt and apply the critical thinking skills in solving problems.
  • * based on my own sample size
Why I chose Tokio Marine Asia?
The company is part of a large multinational company and I felt that there would be a great variety of exposures (from direct business to reinsurance) and many opportunities to work with different cultures in the region (from India to the Philippines and most countries in between).
